Chicory 'Sugar Loaf'

Cichorium intybus 'Sugar Loaf'

Likes a sunny position.

Sow thinly direct into a moist warm soil that's been finely raked.

Sow at a depth of 6-13mm in rows about 38cm apart.

Germination 7-14 days.

Thin to leave 25cm between plants.

From sowing to crop: 20-22 weeks.

Looks like a well-grown cos-type lettuce, with a firm heart which will stand over a long period.

Use thinnings in salads.

Water well during dry periods (as opposed to leaving to die ;)

Best results are obtained from a June-July sowing in rows about 38cm (15inches) apart for use from October onwards.

Cut heads in late autumn and use immediately or store in a cool shed.

Apparently sowing to early can cause bolting.
